Sea of Sameness
The other morning, I was kayaking around the lake. The water was covered with hundreds of beautiful white water lilies, each one floating peacefully on the lily pads. Despite them being a challenge to paddle through, I couldn’t help but admire their beauty.
Then I noticed something up ahead: One single yellow flower.
I stopped paddling and drifted a little closer. I even pulled out my phone and snapped a picture because I couldn't stop wondering, why is that one yellow? And why is there only one, among thousands of white ones?
At first it seemed out of place, like it didn’t fit in. But the more I stared at it, I had a different thought: Maybe it’s exactly where it is supposed to be.
As I went about my day, I couldn't stop thinking about that one yellow flower. Not to discredit the white flowers perched perfectly on top of each lily pad. They are beautiful, no doubt.
But it was this yellow bloom that boldly stood out in a sea of sameness.

How often do we find ourselves trying to fit in, softening our opinions, hiding our quirks, and downplaying our passions?
We worry about looking different, sounding different, choosing differently.
Little by little, we blend in. We convince ourselves it's safer to do so.
But the most noteworthy people I know are the ones who quietly refuse to disappear into a sea of sameness:
It’s my friend, the seventh-grade teacher who starts every Monday morning with a five-minute dance party to create positive energy— because she sees how tough it is to be a tween, especially these days.
It’s the pediatrician whose collection of cartoon ties has become legendary among patients in our town. Kids wonder which one he'll be wearing before he even walks into the room.
It’s my mom who bakes chocolate chip cookies every single week, puts them in little zip lock bags, and brings them to the bank teller, the young man who washes the golf carts, the teenagers working at the car wash, and the police officers directing traffic.
It’s my friend the financial advisor whose tattoo-covered arms aren't about rebellion at all. Every tattoo represents a client, a family, or a life lesson that changed her, and each one has a story she'll gladly tell if you ask her.
None of these people are trying to build a personal brand. They're simply living as themselves.
This is what authenticity looks like.
The goal isn't to stand above everyone else. It's to bring something to the world that no one else can bring quite the way you can.
Maybe that's your kindness. Maybe it's your curiosity. Maybe it's your creativity. Maybe it's your generosity. Maybe it's your laugh.
Perhaps it's your ability to make people feel seen.
Whatever it is... don't hide it. Authenticity is not about trying to be different. It's about refusing to become someone you're not.
I’ve kept the picture of the yellow flower on my phone. It’s a helpful visual, reminding me about the importance of authenticity.
Maybe that's the invitation for all of us.
The world has enough sameness.
But it only gets one of you.
